Flexible Payment Options for Personalized Senior Care

We make it easier to plan and pay for the care your loved one deserves

Paying for Senior Home Care Services

While traditional health insurance might cover expenses incurred for skilled home health services (for example, occupational and physical therapy), it often doesn’t cover home care services. At Options, there are several ways families can plan and pay for senior caregiving expenses.

Private Pay

The majority of client families, including those with Options, pay for home care out-of-pocket, also known as “private pay.” This means using personal funds, such as individual retirement accounts (IRA), pensions, Social Security benefits, 401(k) savings, or other financial resources, to cover the cost of care. Though rare, some families use a financial instrument called a Reverse Mortgage to use the equity value of their home to pay for home care services.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Seniors with long-term care insurance may have specific coverage for home care. These policies, which are distinct from regular health insurance, are often purchased through an insurance agency and can provide financial assistance for in-home care needs. These policies are purchased by individuals in their mid-50s to cover the potential cost of care later in life.

Medical Insurance

While most health and medical insurance plans don’t cover in-home personal care, it’s worth checking with the insurance provider to see if any coverage is available. Although Medicare doesn’t currently cover home care, some states offer in-home care benefits through Medicaid. Additionally, certain Medicare Advantage plans may also include coverage for personal care services.

State and Local Assistance Programs

Some state and local programs offer financial support for in-home care services. To learn more about available assistance, seniors or their families should contact the state Department of Aging for information about relevant programs in their area.

Veterans Benefits

Seniors who receive a pension from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) may be eligible for home care coverage through various VA programs, including VA Aide & Attendance. It’s advisable to explore these benefits if the senior is a veteran.
