Summer Safety for Seniors 101

July 01, 2023

As we age it becomes more difficult to adjust to sudden temperature changes, making older adults more susceptible to heat-related health concerns. This can be due to certain medicines that they take or chronic illnesses that affect their ability to regulate body temperature. When not treated properly, heat-related illnesses can become very serious, and even fatal.

With summer in full swing, you will want to take these precautions to stay comfortable and safe in the heat:

  • Stay hydrated, and drink water regularly. Do not wait until you feel thirsty to hydrate.
  • Avoid using your oven or stove to cook meals.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing.
  • Take showers to help cool down.
  • Maintain the heating and air conditioning system in your home to ensure it cools properly.
  • If you don’t have air conditioning, consider staying with a friend or family member during a heatwave. Or visit a local mall or restaurant, and take advantage of the free air conditioning!
  • Make sure to rest, and do not exert yourself
  • Buddy system; Have others check up on you, and vice versa.
  • Wear plenty of sunscreen with high enough SPF, and clothing to protect yourself from sunburns, which will raise your body temperature.
  • When outside, be sure to wear a hat, and try to stay in the shade. Also, moving slowly will keep you from becoming overheated.
